Key facts

Who is Bree Olson?

Bree Olson is the stage name of Rachel Oberlin, an American actress and former adult performer. The Daily Beast once called her “one of the most sought-after actresses in the adult film industry” (The Daily Beast). Today she’s at least as well known for what she says about the industry after leaving it. As Wikipedia sums it up, since retiring she “has been critical of the discrimination and social stigma directed at adult film performers” (Wikipedia).

A Midwest childhood

Olson was born in Houston. She says she moved with her mother to Fort Wayne, Indiana, at age two, and her mother and stepfather later bought a house in nearby Woodburn (Wikipedia). Her first summer job was detasseling corn, the classic Indiana teenage gig. ABC News put it simply when it asked how “a farm girl from Fort Wayne, Ind.” ended up in national tabloids (ABC News).

Pre-med to porn

According to ABC News, she got interested in the adult business as “a 19-year-old, pre-med student.” “It’s something I’d always been interested in,” she told ABC (ABC News).

She entered the industry in November 2006 and worked with companies including Digital Playground, Elegant Angel and Red Light District. From 2007 to 2010 she was a contract performer for Adam & Eve (Wikipedia). The stage name was deliberate. She says she chose “Bree Olson” because it sounded “wholesome,” and partly because she liked the Olsen twins.

Her rise was fast. Wikipedia lists AVN, XBIZ and XRCO new-starlet honors in 2008. She was Penthouse Pet of the Month for March 2008, Maxim named her one of the 12 top female porn stars in 2010, and in 2011 she was on the covers of both Penthouse and Playboy (Wikipedia).

The Kardashians cameo

In 2007 she appeared on E!‘s Keeping Up with the Kardashians as a nanny to Kendall and Kylie Jenner who gets fired for wearing bikinis on the job (Wikipedia, The Daily Beast). She later told Cosmopolitan, as quoted by Wikipedia, that producers “wanted a super-sexy vixen. Instead they got a cute little girl with blonde hair, like the girl next door.” She added: “I think that they thought because of my background that that’s just something that comes naturally, but it doesn’t to me” (Wikipedia).

The 2011 tabloid storm

In 2011 Olson lived for about six months in Charlie Sheen’s Los Angeles home alongside another girlfriend, Natalie Kenly. Sheen publicly called the two women his “goddesses,” and the relationship ended in April 2011 (Wikipedia, ABC News). Speaking to ABC at 24, she described a tense household: “It was like you could cut the air with a knife sometimes.” She also said she had not known another woman would be living in the house until she arrived (ABC News).

When the subject came back up in 2015, Vulture reported that Olson said she had been tested afterward and that her results were negative (Vulture). We’re not going to add to the gossip. The point here is that her name got attached to someone else’s headlines, which happens a lot to performers.

Life after porn: the stigma

Olson retired from shooting in 2011 (Wikipedia). What she ran into next is the part of her story I think matters most.

In a 2016 interview for the YouTube series Real Women, Real Stories, she said people treated her like a “pedophile” because of her past. Wikipedia reports that she said there was nothing wrong with women embracing their sexuality, but still advised young women to stay away from the business. Her reasons were employers using morality clauses to avoid hiring former performers, and the industry’s lack of long-term financial security. Her line on the money: porn is “the only entertainment industry that doesn’t offer talent royalties after they are gone” (Wikipedia).

Her sharpest line came in an essay for The Daily Dot:

“Porn didn’t hurt me. The way society treats me for having done it does.”

— Bree Olson, The Daily Dot essay, as quoted by Wikipedia (source)

According to CNN (via Wikipedia), she worked “reluctantly” as a webcam model after leaving, mainly because she had few other options (Wikipedia).

Still acting

She kept working on mainstream screens. Wikipedia lists the comedy Purgatory Comics (2009), The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) (2015), and Penn Jillette and Adam Rifkin’s Director’s Cut (2016). She played Divatox in the 2015 short Power/Rangers and appeared in Funny or Die videos (Wikipedia). She describes herself as vegan and lesbian.

My Take (opinion — Máximo García)

Bree says the thing nobody wants on a T-shirt: the work wasn’t what hurt, the treatment afterward was. I believe her, because I’ve watched the same thing happen to friends. A bank account closes, a landlord stops answering, a “normal” job offer disappears after a background search. We tell performers to save money, and we should. But the bigger fix is cultural. A person who did legal work on camera shouldn’t be locked out of the rest of life.

Her advice to young women, that it isn’t wrong but you should think hard before you start, is the most honest recruiting talk in this business. I’d add: own your brand, own your content, and plan the exit on day one. My own approach is at maximogarciaworld.com.

Related: Lisa Ann also heard “you’ll never get another job,” and proved it wrong on SiriusXM. Belle Knox went through the stigma while she was still in college.
