Key facts

I love a story where somebody shows up with a plan. Sasha Grey didn’t drift into anything. She saved money, moved, and talked about her career like a founder talks about a startup.

A waitress with a five-year plan

Grey grew up in Sacramento, was raised by her mother after her parents divorced, and went through four high schools before graduating a year early at 17. She took film, dance and acting classes at Sacramento City College, then bussed tables until she had $7,000 saved for Los Angeles (Wikipedia). The LA Times noted she had studied theater from age 12 to 18 (LA Times).

“I needed her”: the Soderbergh call

Soderbergh found her through a 2006 Los Angeles magazine profile. He told the LA Times: “Sasha has a macro vision of how she is going to conduct herself. She has a five-year plan.” Grey’s own words in the same interview:

“Part of the reason I got into this business was to change it. I can take my fantasies and ideas and deliver those to an audience. It’s all an extension of who I am.”

She was also launching her own company and planned to act as her own manager, saying she wanted to keep “putting the control in women’s hands” (LA Times).

“They can never take away your voice”

In 2012 she told The Guardian she used to arrive on set with her own lines because directors tried to mold her into stock characters:

“People can dress you the way they want, they can do your makeup the way they want, but they can never take away your voice.”

She said she wanted to quit in her prime, and moved on to her industrial band aTelecine, a vocal on Throbbing Gristle’s final album, and her debut novel (The Guardian). Since then: The Juliette Society (2013), The Janus Chamber (2016), The Mismade Girl (2018), and Twitch streaming since 2020 (Wikipedia).

My Take (opinion — Máximo García)

What gets me is the discipline. A teenager saving tip money with a plan, a director comparing hiring her to hiring Brad Pitt, and then she walks away while she’s on top, on her terms. Love her or not, she wrote her own script, literally.
